The UGCC through Caritas-Ukraine is organizing humanitarian help for victims of the flood

09-08-2008

07.08.08 - In Canada a campaign is being conducted to help those who suffered from the flood. Metropolitan of the UGCC in Winnipeg Lawrence (Huculak), a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian branch of the charitable organization CNEWA, appealed to Canadians with a request to help the suffering regions of Ukraine.

"I invite the people of Canada to support CNEWA and Canadian efforts to provide humanitarian help for the victims of flood," Metropolitan Lawrence appealed. Bishop Kenneth (Nowakowski), Eparch, former president of Caritas-Ukraine, is himself actively involved in collecting money.

CNEWA is an agency of the Holy See which now for more than 80 years has provided charitable support for Churches and faithful of the Near East, Eastern Europe, India and Northeast Africa. It carries out projects to support needy children, programs sponsoring seminarians, projects for the development of communities, health protection, the development of education, and programs for the development of interreligious dialogue and for the organization of help in extraordinary situations. A partner of CNEWA in Ukraine is Caritas-Ukraine.

Caritas-Ukraine has also appealed for urgent help to partners from the Confederation of Caritas Internationalis to carry out a program to provide help for victims of flood.

Caritas defined the points of help which will be given in local centers of the organization for persons who suffered from the flood. During the first phase of help, socially unprotected families and single persons of old age will be provided with food products (sugar, vegetable oil, flour, macaroni, rice), drinking water, and so on. Depending on the amount of monetary donations collected, food parcels may be prepared with canned meat, powdered milk, and children's food. Also, the following types of help are planned for distribution:

• items of everyday use (pillows, sheets, towels, linen);

• clothes, shoes;

• medicine;

• building materials.

The regional offices of the Caritas have already provided some necessary help: meals and clothes for victims of suffering territories.
