Judge recognizes right of Spanish to object to ‘Education for the Citizenry’

Madrid, Spain, May 14, 2009 / 09:02 pm (CNA).- A court in Zaragoza, Spain has recognized the right of a student at a local school to exercise conscientious objection against the course Education for the Citizenry, ruling she can exempt herself from the class.

The ruling in favor of the parents will allow the girl to be absent from the class without her grades being affected.

Teresa Monaj, a local activist for parents, said the court in Zaragoza is the same one that issued another ruling favorable to objecting parents on April 13. These are in addition to the four rulings issued by Spain's Supreme Court supporting conscientious objection to the course.

Monaj said parents hope the Supreme Court of the province of Aragon, where Zaragoza is located, will take into account these rulings as it issues its own.
