UKRAINE - The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ is one of the 12 most important holidays in Christianity, celebrating the Lord's transfiguration on Mount Tabor.

Jesus took with him three of his disciples Peter, James, and John up Mount Tabor. There He prayed when his tired disciples fell asleep. When they awoke they saw that Jesus Christ is transfigured: His face radiated like the sun, and His clothing became white as snow and sparkled in the light. Near him appeared the prophets Moses and Elijah and they began to speak with Jesus. Suddenly a large white cloud enveloped them and the voice of God said: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him." (Matthew 17: 5)

This holiday has been celebrated since the 4th century when St. Helena built a church on Mount Tabor in honor of the Transfiguration of Jesus. Since the 6th century this holiday appeared in the Eastern Church under the name Transfiguration of the Lord. At first it was celebrated in February; however the joyous holiday fell during Lent. Thus it was moved to August 6 (Old Style), forty days before the Feast of the Holy Cross.

In Ukraine it is also called Yabluchnyj (Apple) Spas, because traditionally on this day Ukrainians sanctify apples and other fruits of the new harvest.

Evangelical Christians also mark this holiday, but do not celebrate it on the same level as other important Christian holidays.
