Ukraine’s President Proposes to Religious Organizations to Serve Requiems for Victims of Genocidal Famine

KYIV - In order to honor the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian nation and ensure proper organization of events and measures for the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of Holodomors [forced famines] (November 28, 2009), on October 2, 2009, President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree "On Events for the Occasion of the Day of Remembrance of Memory of Victims of Holodomors" (№795). According to the document, the Cabinet of Ministers is to set up an organizing committee on the preparation of the mentioned events within ten days. In his decree, the president proposed to religious organizations to conduct memorial services on November 28 and other events in November to honor the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Ukrainian nation.

According to the decree, the Cabinet of Ministers with the participation of the organizing committee should develop and approve within two weeks a plan of events for October-November 2009 to honor the memory of the victims of the famines. The plan should envisage such measures as conducting memorial events in Kyiv, particularly, in the state museum "Memorial of Victims of Holodomors in Ukraine," the Ukrainian action "Light a candle" on November 28, thematic exhibitions on the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Kyiv and other places, etc.
