ROME - On November 8 - 12, 2009, in Rome was held the 6th World Congress "Pastoral Response to the Phenomenon of Migrating in the Age of Globalization." During the congress, the Committee of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on Matters of Migrants presented the Ukrainian translation of the Instruction of the Papal Committee on Matters of Pastoral Care for Migrants and Unsettled Persons Erga migrantes caritas Christi (Christ's love for migrants).

"The document is to become an appropriate response of the church to the new pastoral needs of migrants, allowing them to have the possibility not only of personal spiritual growth and development but also to use for conducting new evangelization and missionary activity," reads the instruction of the basic document of the Catholic Church on migrants.

The discussion during the congress concerned pastoral responses to the challenges of global and internal migration, preservation by migrants of their identity, cooperation with structures of civil society, and inter-church, inter-denominational, and inter-religious dialogues. "At the same time, some urgent questions were left unresolved, including the questions regarding the assimilation of Catholics of the Eastern Rite, observation by them of their traditions and customs, the demand to provide only unmarried priests for service in the western European countries," noted a delegate of the Congress, the head of the Committee of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on Matters of Migrants, Hryhorii Seleshchuk.
