Priest murdered in India; motive unclear

29-04-2010

A Catholic priest was murdered in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday night, April 28. Police are unclear as to the motive for the killing.

Father Peter Bombaci, who had founded a home to work with recovering alcoholics, was strangled and stabbed on the street. Archbishop Felix Machado, who saw the grisly murder scene near his residence, praised the slain cleric as "a priest full of faith, serving the Church and the people without discrimination of caste or creed; he forgot himself to serve the most poor and abandoned."

The archbishop said that the killing might have been the result of a personal grudge or a botched robbery. He dismissed the possibility that Hindu extremists were responsible, saying that militant Hindu groups are not active in the area.
