On November 30, 2010, the city of Lviv for the first time is to join over 1,200 cities around the world in illuminating one of its central monuments - the Boim Chapel, thus joining the international campaign "Cities for Life - Cities Against the Death Penalty!"

City officials noted that every year from now on Lviv will participate in the promotion of the Cities for Life and will stress the importance of this day.

On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the first historic resolution on the global moratorium on the death penalty. This was a breakthrough in legal thought and world practice.

November 30 marks the day in 1786 of the first abolition of the death penalty by a European state, by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
