09-07-2008

08.07.2008 - Uzhhorod-From 4 to 6 July, on an invitation of the apostolic administrator of the Mukachiv Greek Catholic Eparchy, Bishop Milan (Shashik) of the Transcarpathian region was visited by the Archbishop, cardinal Joachim Meisner of Cologne (Germany) of the Roman Catholic Church.

ZAXID.NET was informed by the press service of the regional state administration that the cardinal met with the first deputy head of the regional state administration, Ivan Baloha. The guest was interested in the Transcarpathian region, in general, in the history and the work of the regional authorities in this multi-national and multi-confessional region. According to Bishop Milan Shashik, the region has the highest density of religious buildings.

"The Transcarpathian region is part of Ukraine. We have to work for representatives of all the nationalities living in the region. We cannot single anyone out. The same with the confessions," noted Ivan Baloha.

During the meeting, ways to solve property problems of the Mukachiv Greek Catholic Eparchy were discussed. According to Ivan Baloha, the construction of a new building of the Uzhhorod National University Library is to start in the near future. The construction will hopefully solve the most painful problem - the handover of the residential buildings of the Greek Catholic bishops at Kapitulna Street in Uzhhorod.

The archbishop visited construction sites of new Greek Catholic Churches being built in places where Greek Catholics were not given back there historic churches.
