07-08-2008

02.08.08 - These days, the Roman 11th General Chapter of St. Josaphat of the Basilian Order [OSBM], which began on July 7, 2008, at the center of the General Government of the Order in the city of Rome, has ended. The main task of the Chapter was updating the Constitutions of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat and passing on the draft of the Statutes for the approval of the Apostolic See.

On July 12, the Chapter chose the Main Advisers of the Order for the next four years. On July 13, Fr. Vasyliy Kovbych, Proto-archimandrite of the OSBM, in concelebration with Fathers Mauricio Popadiuk, OSBM, and Joseph Fortuna, OSBM, the First and Second General Advisers, celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Annunciation Chapel of Radio Vatican, which was broadcast live.

On Monday July 28, the Chapter's Fathers, and members of the Main Government and Delegates from nine Provinces of the Order celebrated Divine Liturgy near the Altar of Saint Basil the Great in the Vatican's Saint Peter's Basilica, under which the relics of St. Josaphat the Martyr rest in peace. In his sermon Fr. Vasyliy Kovbych turned attention to the personal characteristic of St. Josaphat the Martyr and called the monks present to reflect on how it is possible today to follow his example. That same day, during the evening plenary meeting, the Statutes of the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat were voted on and ratified, which on Tuesday July 29 were passed to the Congregation of the Oriental Churches for the approval of the Apostolic Capital.

For next two days during plenary meetings were considered the works of various commissions. Corresponding decisions which touch the current affairs of the Order were accepted on the basis of these.

On July 31, the Chapter's Fathers celebrated a Divine Liturgy in thanksgiving. That evening the final plenary meeting took place, during which Fr. Proto-archimandrite Vasyliy Kovbych, OSBM, Head of the Chapter, declared the closing of the 11th Roman General Chapter of the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat.
