World Ukrainians Pray for Victims of Genocide-Holodomor

Kyiv-As part of the 9th World Congress of Ukrainians (WCU), held in the Ukrainian House in Kyiv from 20 to 22 August 2008, a forum on occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Genocide-Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine was held. That evening, a solemn religious procession to the memorial to the Holodomor at St. Michael's Square was organized. The heads and authorized representatives of various Ukrainian churches there celebrated a requiem for the victims of the man-made famine.

According to the press-service of the UGCC, the Patriarchal Curia of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) invited the delegates of the event to visit the construction site of the Patriarchal Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection of the UGCC in Kyiv on 23 August. The visit is to start with a prayer for Ukraine in the adjacent Church of the Annunciation. It will be followed by an opportunity to speak with the head of the UGCC, Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar). At the end, the participants will be able to examine the process of construction of the Patriarchal Center of the UGCC.

Today the Ukrainian World Congress includes Ukrainian communities and organizations from 30 countries. Its main aim is to unite Ukrainians worldwide, as, according to various estimates, 15-20 million Ukrainians live outside their homeland. The most numerous Ukrainian communities are concentrated in Russia, the USA, Canada and Poland. Ethnic Ukrainians also live in Australia, Argentina, Norway, Uruguay, and other countries.

During the ceremony of the opening of the congress, honored Ukrainians of the world were awarded with orders of St. Volodymyr the Great.
