Anniversary of Referendum on Ukrainian Independence marked

On 1 December, 1991, Ukrainians supported the Act on Independence of Ukraine, which was passed by the Supreme Council of Ukraine on 24 August, 1991. The referendum ballot included the text of the Act on the proclamation of the independence of Ukraine and a question "Do you confirm the Act of proclamation of the independence of Ukraine?"

31 891 700 citizen, that is 84.2% of the total number of voters, participated in the voting. 28 804 100 citizens (90,3%) of them answered "Yes, I confirm." The population of all the regions of Ukraine, regardless of their nationality, gave the positive answer.

On 1 December, 1991, the first President of the independent Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk was elected. 19 643 600 citizens (61,56% of the people who participated in the voting) voted for him.
