Representatives of Renovabis Visit Ukraine

07-07-2008

05.07.2008 - Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh), Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Kyiv, summarized the recent visit to Ukraine of representatives of the charitable foundation Renovabis: "As far as I can tell, the guests from Germany were positively impressed with what they saw. And once again the importance of their help was confirmed, and the efficiency of its use."
Exactly such ideas, according to Bishop Bohdan, were expressed by Fr. Dietger Demuth, director of Renovabis, and Mr. Joachim Sauer, responsible for the cooperation of the foundation with Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, during interaction with people. "A good new item for us was the fact that the guests noted that not only do they give us something, but also they receive from us: a testimony of faith and an example of the Christian life," so Bishop Bohdan continued his comment. Ugcc.org.ua posted this story on 26 June, 2008.

The purpose of the visit of the representatives of Renovabis was the desire to familiarize themselves with the status and prospects for development of the UGCC in central and eastern Ukraine. In addition to this opportunity, the guests analyzed the general situation in relation to the use of costs which were allotted by Renovabis. Also important was the occasion for the interaction of the delegation of the foundation with people who benefit from their help. For the few days spent in Ukraine, the guests examined the building of the Patriarchal Cathedral and visited communities of the UGCC in Chernihiv and Brovary (in Brovary the local community will start building a church soon thanks to the help of Renovabis).

An important moment of the visit was the meeting of Fr. Dietger Demuth and Mr. Joachim Sauer with His Beatitude Lubomyr. During the conversation the parties analyzed the development of the UGCC in the years of legalization, and also exchanged opinions regarding the religious situation in modern Europe.

This year Renovabis marks its 15th anniversary. It was created by the decision of the German Episcopal Conference with the assistance of the Committee of the Laity of Germany. The complete name of the organization is "Solidarity initiative of the German Catholics with the people of Central and Eastern Europe." In Latin "renovabis" means "you will renew." This word is taken from Psalm 104 (30): "When you send forth your breath, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth."

All former countries of the post-Soviet space, the 15 republics of the former Soviet Union, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Balkan countries, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania, are in the center of attention and care of Renovabis. The specifics of the activity of the organization is to help those who help themselves; that is, this does not mean "throwing together" some projects or ideas, but only helping carry out what someone is doing already.
