HONG KONG, APRIL 20, 2010 (Zenit.org). Catholics in Hong Kong are showing their solidarity with people of the Qinghai province who endured a 6.9-magnitude earthquake last week that took the lives of more than 2,000 people.

In response to the April 14 quake, parishes in Hong Kong prayed for the victims during Sunday Masses.

Bishop John Tong of Hong Kong instructed parishes to arrange a special donation either at last Sunday's Mass or next Sunday's. He encouraged the faithful to be generous in their donations, and he joined with the people in praying for the victims and rescuers.

The special collection postponed another collection already scheduled for April 25 to benefit the diocesan seminary.

The Chinese government declared that Wednesday will be a national day of mourning.
